In sum, if you want to see many species or cultures, do not go to an island, especially a particularly distant island. But if you want to see unusual species or cultures, then an island is the place to go, especially an isolated one. If you want to be healthy, travel to the most distant, least visited island possible. If you want to do novel research on the biogeography of diseases, then as far as I can tell, islands are where you want to go, because we know extraordinarily little regarding disease on islands. However, if you are from a mainland, make sure you are healthy before you go, because we know that island species and peoples can be extremely susceptible to mainland diseases. I come back to this susceptibility in the next chapter but one.
